Features:
Automated Discovery & Mapping
WhatsUp Gold Layer 2/3 Discovery identifies all of the devices on your network including your routers, switches, servers and more. WhatsUp Gold features Seed Scan technology which discovers all devices on the network by automatically learning your network topology. It can also discover the network using an IP Range Scan, from a Start and End IP Address and discovers all port-to-port connectivity and network dependencies.
WhatsUp Gold automatically generates Layer 2/3 network maps of your core infrastructure, Windows® infrastructure, servers, printers and more. The unique interactive network map displays your entire IT environment from end-to-end, quickly showing the status of every device and letting you see your end-to-end network health at a glance. Network administrators can click on any device to instantly display its status, properties and assigned monitors, or they can drill-down to dashboards displaying detailed performance data.
Smart Alerting & Actions
WhatsUp Gold provides real-time alerts via email, text, and logging. Alerts empower you to proactively respond to problems before they impact users, applications and the business. WhatsUp Gold issues an alert when a device or monitor changes state (e.g., from an up state to a down state) or when a performance threshold is exceeded – for example, when memory utilization exceeds 75 percent. WhatsUp Gold’s “smart” alerting uses the network dependencies automatically identified in the discovery process to eliminate alert storms and quickly identify the root causes of network problems. The WhatsUp Gold Alert Center displays threshold-based alerts in a single dashboard.
You can create action policies for alerts including event logging, email, texting, and automated self-healing actions such as restarting an application service or any other action that can be initiated by a PowerShell script.
Manage & Monitor Your Infrastructure
WhatsUp Gold continuously monitors the availability and performance of your infrastructure from routers, switches, and firewalls through to your servers and applications. In short, WhatsUp Gold can monitor anything with an IP address that can be accessed with standard monitoring protocols including ICMP and SNMP.
Reporting & Inventory
WhatsUp Gold delivers an easy-to-customize reporting environment. You can select from hundreds of out-of-the-box views or easily create drag-and-drop dashboards that provide a quick assessment of overall IT health – even detailed drill-down dashboards to isolate the root causes of performance problems. These dashboards can help you quickly resolve performance problems across your organization.
WhatsUp Gold also features integrated inventory reporting including hardware inventory, reports on installed software and updates, warranty reports, and more. These reports save both time and money and can decrease year-end IT inventory activities from weeks to minutes. The reports will also help you find under-utilized hardware resources that can be re-deployed and identify unlicensed software to avoid expensive true-up costs.
Add-On Modules:
Network Traffic Analysis
With the addition of Network Traffic Analysis, your network devices can send flow records to port 9999 on the WhatsUp Gold server. We support a wide variety of flow protocols including NetFlow, NSEL, sFlow, J-Flow and IPFIX and includes features like:
- A centralized view of network traffic data with built-in reports
- Top application reports using Cisco's NBAR classification data
- CBQoS reports for the details on class-based policies
Application Monitoring
Powerful application monitoring tools include the ability to record web transactions data to generate scripts and monitor the response times of web-applications. Quickly isolate the root causes of performance problems with features that include:
- Built-in, customizable monitoring profiles for Microsoft Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, and Active Directory
- Dashboard and reporting tools let you view the health of all the applications, individual application or troubleshoot at the component level.
Configuration Management
Support compliance requirements for HIPAA, SOX, FISMA and PCI DSS and other regulations. The Configuration Manager gives you a set of tools that will automate the process of backing up configurations for network devices that support Telnet or SSH. Other features include:
- Alerts for configuration changes (authorized or not)
- Audits that compare running configurations against defined policies
- Built-in scripts for SNMP string changes, user name adds/removals, configuration backups
Virtual Environment Monitoring
Virtual Monitoring gathers performance statistics for the host server and guest, maps out the virtual environment, and allows users to be notified based on information in event logs coming from the Hyper-V/VMware management server.
You can also discover management services (such as VMware vCenters) or individual hypervisors (Hyper-V, ESX/ESXi) running in an unmanaged environment. Using management services to discover virtual machines provides monitoring and logging continuity required in high-availability, fault tolerant or workload managed environments.
Failover Manager
Assure minimal monitoring downtime. Automatically switch WhatsUp Gold from a primary server to a standby server when the primary system is not functioning normally. The Failover Console displays primary server and secondary server data including:
- The machine's host server address
- Machine status states including: Active - currently polling the network, Standby - ready to assume network polling, Down - unable to perform network polling, or Unknown
Distributed Monitoring
Gain more visibility to remote networks. The distributed network monitoring feature extends the capabilities of WhatsUp Gold to multiple remote networks, allowing a central installation server and one or more remote installations.
Monitor remote installations from a designated central server. Leverage distributed reports to create remote site dashboard views. A number of remote installations can send data back to the central server creating a unified view for managing multiple remote networks.

*The performance for the number of devices and monitors supported is dependent upon several system variables such as server processor and memory size, polling frequency, round-trip time (RTT) for polling distance, the amount of time for which data is archived in the database, types of monitors polled (for example, SNMP-type monitors are significantly more efficient than WMI monitors), and other factors.
Poller Requirements
Depending on the network environment and product deployment, WhatsUp Gold can poll up to a maximum of 20,000 devices and up to 100,000 monitors with one WhatsUp Gold server and additional pollers (additional pollers required depend on the amount of SNMP and WMI monitors). Additional pollers installed on your WhatsUp Gold system transmit active monitor and performance monitor data to the WhatsUp Gold server. Extending polling activity across multiple pollers increases the number of devices for which WhatsUp Gold can poll and collect data to send back to the WhatsUp Gold system. Using additional pollers, WhatsUp Gold can efficiently scale polling operations to a larger number of network devices, ultimately providing the capacity to monitor and manage larger networks. Additional pollers may be installed on any Windows system on the network, other than the WhatsUp Gold server.
Minimum required for each additional poller
